Tony Watson

My working life was completely maritime; I have been Master, Mate or crew on boats and ships from a 6ft. Dinghy to a 300,000 ton tanker, including time as a crew member of the Salcombe RNLI lifeboat.

On retirement, about 16 years ago, my wife introduced me to art by getting me to sketch an old, weathered hawthorn tree on Dartmoor. I never looked back and took tuition from various South Devon artists, mostly within the Salcombe Art Club studio. I have made many new friends and have learnt a lot about materials, supports, etc. used in drawing and painting. Today a lot of my artistic efforts are directed towards life drawing and I have converted some of these sketches into oil paintings. One of them, Mother and Child, is of a friend who is passionate about breast feeding and the freedom of mothers to feed their babies anywhere, any time. This picture will eventually find its way to the model’s home.

I also atttend many courses within the club in the autumn, winter and spring. Most recently I was introduced to egg tempera, a fascinating medium with which I will endeavour to become more familiar.
