I am a printmaker and photographer working with various techniques including linocuts, collagraphs and etching. Many of my images combine several techniques, such as a drypoint with a collagraph, or etching and linocut. Some pieces incorporate these multiple images as physical layers using the technique of chine collé, each layer adding part of its nature to the image.
Originally a biologist, programmer and now a Dartmoor guide, these experiences influence my subject matter and images. From a biological perspective, there may be a floral or faunal component and sometimes this is fairly clear. Often however there’s a degree of abstraction and imagination which may derive from years of microscope work.
Landscape is present at various levels; quite literally in the case of Dartmoor and a constant goal is to represent the idea of layers of history. Some unseen below the surface; others more visible but with obscure origins. Rather than a precise representation I try to reflect these layers of history while capturing some aspect of an idea or the ‘feel’ of a place.
