Beth Cave

Beth Cave is a contemporary landscape painter whose work is rooted in the South Devon Coastline and the Island of Bequia in the Caribbean. Carrying a light bag of materials and tools to remote beaches, viewpoints and on boats, she captures the essence of place, light and weather. Her plein air watercolour sketchbooks express her experience of belonging to these places and are the foundation of her larger more abstract works. She is developing her own visual language through using oils like watercolours and her paintings are defined by layers of transparency and vibrant colour.

Starting from a light base on boards enables her to retain the natural light and subtlety of her sketches. Using oils thinly, spraying and glazing to enable the paint to move organically she uses a variety of tools to create more random expressive marks. As she builds up several layers to achieve complex surfaces she is able to achieve a greater depth of colour and tone. Her aim is for greater ambiguity which communicates the beauty and character of the places she loves and her joy at being there.

During 2024 Beth has undertaken the Professional Landscape Mentoring Programme at Newlyn School of Art where she has gained inspiration and guidance from a range of respected landscape artists. Alongside and prior to that she has completed a range of courses with artists she admires in Gloucestershire, Newlyn and Saint Ives.

She has exhibited at:
