Barbara Milligan Lancaster

After studying at Bath Lane College of Art Newcastle and Leeds University,

I worked as a printed textile designer selling in England France and America.

My first teaching job was at Central School of Art London, and from there a career in academia developed. I have been the head of schools of Art, Design and Architecture in England and Scotland, developing Art and Design education at undergraduate and post graduate level.

I have travelled extensively in China and Europe developing programmes and partnerships in Art and Design. I am an emeritus professor in Art and Design.

I have exhibited in France and the UK, and with the Craft Council.

Over 10 years ago I decided to concentrate on my own practice and set up a studio in France. I went back to studying, first at L’ecole des Beaux -Arts in Qiumper, and more recently at

The Slade School of Art, London.

I moved to Totnes, Devon five years ago.

I use oil paint on canvas or board. I draw using a variety of medium.

My influences are constantly changing, but daily life, fashion and street culture observed through the human figure are important. I have been painting family and friends a way of thinking and connecting with them during COVID.

My artistic influences are wide and eclectic, but some constants are Soutine, Degas,

Lee Krasner, Rodin’s Drawings, Joffe, Auerbach, and Ocean.

I have spent time in the Dartington Hall printmaking studio, and the work on show in this exhibition are from that period.

Currently I have been illustrating children’s books, collaborating with the poet John Lancaster, on “The Boy Who Always Wore Shorts “and “One Night in Greenhead Park”

This has led to thoughts on poetry and paint resulting in a recent piece of work entitled

“What Do You Think”, recently shown at the Birdwood Gallery Totnes.
