Petra grew up in Germany and later spent many years living in the UAE, Bahrain and Oman before settling in the Totnes area, where she is now based. She always enjoyed art, but decided later in life to study it more seriously and went on to complete a BA in Fine Art.
Her work is inspired by colour, texture, pattern and shape, and influenced by the places and cultures has she visited and lived in, especially Africa, the Far Ear and the Middle East. She is deeply inspired by the memories and experiences connected to her travels and the years she spent living in the Middle East.
Petra works in an intuitive, experimental and process-led way, often starting without a fixed plan and letting the work develop naturally as she goes along.
She mainly works with mixed media and acrylic paints, building up layers and surfaces, but she also creates painterly woodcut prints using lots of layers of different colours. What she enjoys most in both painting and printmaking is the balance between control and unpredictability, and the way a piece can slowly take on a life of its own.
Petra is a member of the Wooden Spoon Printing Group.
