I am a designer by profession having spent more than 35 years working in architecture, interiors, and furniture design, I recently started painting in late 2022. Having spent most of my life living between the moors and coast my paintings are inspired by the ever-changing light and colour of the surrounding Devon countryside. They are painted intuitively, empowering the viewer to interpret their own imagery and
stories.
Being a designer constrained by rigid lines and practicality the paintings are a way for me to break free from these restrictions.
I work in oil paint and cold wax medium on paper applying layers of oil and a cold wax mix I gradually build up layers and textures using rollers, spatulas, and palette knives, then scrape away areas to reveal the colours below. I often like to emphasise and exaggerate colour to give a more uplifting image, often starting with areas of gilding wax to give an additional depth, light and vibrancy.
