Beth Cave

My enjoyment of the sea informs my perspective and use of colour. The work flows from many quick sketches in inks, watercolour and graphite while I am outside immersed in the coastal landscape.

In the studio I begin by spraying colour before pouring oil paint to create organic shapes and fluidity, glazing to create transparent layers of movement. The composition evolves between the sketches and the materials, expressing my experience of being in these special places in all weathers. I love to capture the shifting shapes and moods of the sea in all its variety and depth and its patterns meeting the land. My marks are made intuitively in response to the light and moods of the South Devon coast I know intimately.

My aim is for greater ambiguity which communicates the beauty and character of the place. The result is deeply atmospheric paintings with a powerful sense of place.

I have shown throughout the South West in a range of joint and group exhibitions.
