Bernice Johnston

I have lived in East Portlemouth since 1966, having moved from Bristol to Rickham Farm. My interest in art began at an early age, but my professional career truly started when I chose Technical Drawing as a school subject. I later obtained an ONC in Electrical Engineering and worked as a draughtswoman for the South Western Electricity Board and the Central Electricity Generating Board.

After moving to Devon, I transitioned into signwriting, producing signboards for various local businesses throughout the South Hams. While my preferred medium was initially pen and ink—during which time I completed many animal portrait commissions—I have since explored watercolours and soft pastels. Currently, oils are my favourite medium, though I continue to experiment with modern techniques while always returning to traditional methods.

I have frequently exhibited my work with the Frogmore Art Group, the East Portlemouth Art Club, Harbour House in Kingsbridge, and the Beach Gallery in East Portlemouth.

I feel incredibly fortunate to live in such a beautiful area, as the local scenery provides an endless supply of inspiration for my work.
