Skies can be easy to paint, but also very difficult!
The aim of this course is to increase our understanding of the sky and to empower us to paint it more convincingly.
The sky, because it holds our prime light source, affects everything we see.
But this course involves the study of painting the sky itself, and an exploration and understanding of the behaviour of the light and colours within it, which directly relates to the light and colours of the subjects beneath it. Discovering how to analyse what is happening in the sky, and to relay it convincingly, lends a credibility to the entire painting.
I also find the formation and nature of clouds fascinating – endlessly changing the landscape beneath them, but also reforming and affecting the light, colour and shadows within themselves. Painting clouds presents wonderful opportunities for the artist to convey atmosphere and mood, even movement.
During the course we will look at skies painted by other artists as well as experimenting and making many studies of our own.
