I studied in London and taught art in some vibrant and innovative art departments, specialising in textile design.
Now, I concentrate solely on my work, painting in my garden studio in the South Hams where I strive to convey the essence of what actually excites me to paint.
By making marks, scraping back, then adding more marks I create multi layered rich textures that describe a passage of time.
There are two subjects that constantly interest and inspire me.
One is the meeting of the sea onto the land or rocky outcrops.
The other is the aged surfaces of old buildings with the contrasting shapes of their windows and doors. The layers of paint with mosses and lichens build up a rich patina and this contrasts with the clear shapes of the windows and niches.
I mainly make my own paints from pure pigments with various binders to produce oil and acrylic paint. I sometimes incorporate additional material such as iron, copper and beeswax to enhance and enrich the work.
