SUMMARY:Exploring the use of Source Material (Mondays for Four Weeks)
DESCRIPTION:Exploring the use of source material\, whether it be photographs\, sketches and studies\, memories or ideas\, this course will help us recognize what is driving our desire to paint something. Understanding the intent\, and how to use and translate the source material to achieve it\, helps us communicate more effectively with the viewer and induce a response in them. Whether there is a story or narrative element\, a celebration of observation\, or the creation of a mood or atmosphere\, using the material tools and the skills we have at our disposal will help us to create our best work. \n \nYou should bring your preferred painting media and I will send an appropriate email a few days before each class as the course progresses. \nkarenpophamartist.com \nkarenpophamartist@googlemail.com \n

SUMMARY:The 2025 Art Lecture
DESCRIPTION:We are very pleased to announce that David Kirk (Artist & Art Historian) will be giving a talk on the highly regarded and influential PIERO DELLA FRANCESCA Saturday April 12th from 12.30 to 1.30 pm for Drinks and bits\, followed by the talk at 1.30 pm until about 2.45. \nMembers free\, non members £5\, pay on day. \nPIERO DELLA FRANCESCA (1415-1492)\nIn his lifetime he was better known as a Mathematician more than Artist. He painted fewer than 30 paintings\, sometimes taking over 10 years to finish\, but the meaning of some is still argued over by Art Historians. Although his landscapes are bathed in clear Tuscan morning light\, they are still mysterious and underpinned by geometry. This makes them remarkable\, intriguing and unique. \nDAVID KIRK\n \nBorn in 1960\, David was brought up in rural Somerset and went on to study at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art (1980-83) graduating with a degree in Fine Art. David is a professional painter in his own right (look him up!) and has for many years been Head of History of Art at Uppingham school. His own work has been exhibited at RONA gallery\, St James Gallery\, Flying Colours and Langham Galleries. He is now represented by the Goldmark Gallery. \n

SUMMARY:Less can be More - Simplifying Work and Keeping Meaning (Workshop)
DESCRIPTION:How often do we reflect and think our work was better an hour or so ago?  Wish that we could undo the last addition? Has it drifted too far from the starting intentions leading to the loss of our original excitement to feelings of disappointment and frustration.  In this one-day workshop we will be exploring simplifying your work to its essence\, while maintaining your intention and meaning without additional distracting extras and unnecessary flourishes. \nThe day will explore art that has maintained meaning in its purity and simplicity\, by working through a series of exercises to develop a toolkit for you to use in your practice and on future projects. \n \nwww.annchesterking.co.uk \nannchesterking@gmail.com

Emphasis will be on finding a good composition and mark making. \nBack in the studio we can develop our sketches into larger works using mixed media and discuss how to go forward.\nMaybe try out coloured pencils\, watercolour\, and pastel (oil or soft). \n \n

SUMMARY:Printmaking Possibilities: Collagraphy & More (Weekend Workshop)
DESCRIPTION:Collagraphy is a term for a very broad range of printmaking techniques. It’s particularly suitable for more abstract or patterned images and can be used well in combination with other techniques. This course will look at a range of methods of creating an image by modifying the surface of a printing plate. Some may be familiar some less so. We’ll also look at various inking options to increase the possibilities. A variety of printing papers will be available to add another variable to the mix. I hope also to be able to at least demonstrate an interesting Japanese way of processing a finished print. \nAll materials provided so no need to bring anything – but an open mind and willingness to experiment will help. \n \nI’ll circulate an email during January with more information. \nW: www.TheUnseenView.com\nE: nigel@nigelgrist.com\nIG: nigel.grist

SUMMARY:Light\, Through Colour (Weekend Workshop)
DESCRIPTION:Without light there is no colour. \nIn painting\, artists want to convey light\, whether it is ambient or suffused\, subtle or dramatic and focused\, or involving shadows and reflections. Light describes form and is relevant to all figurative painting and many abstract paintings. \nAs painters we use pigment\, so to create ‘light‘ we use colour – in the appropriate hues\, tones and values. \nBy learning about colour and how to mix it and use it\, we discover an incredible tool that is essential to help us achieve the effects we want to convey. \nWe will start at 10am and finish at 4pm each day. \nThis workshop involves exercises and adventures in exploring the enormous potential of using colour\, in whatever media you choose for your main work\, but please bring lots of rough paper and perhaps a variety of media to experiment with beforehand –  eg charcoal\, pen and ink\, collage\, crayons\, pastel and watercolour etc \n \nFor any queries or for further information please contact: karenpopham@googlemail.com or 07729 712454 \nwww.karenpophamartist.com

SUMMARY:Introduction to Oil Pastels (Workshop)
DESCRIPTION:Oil pastels are the perfect medium for creating colourful as well as atmospheric tonal work. This versatile medium is wonderful for building up layers of colour (working from dark to light) overlaying colours to make subtle and beautiful hues. It is excellent tool for learning about colour mixing whether creating vibrant abstracts or still life paintings. It also works well transforming failed watercolour or acrylic paintings! \nI will demonstrate the various ways this less known medium can be used on its own as well as with turps and pencil. \n \nFor any queries or for further information please contact: sally@cainer.com \nwww.sallyfisher.net

SUMMARY:Introduction to Printmaking (A Four Week Course on Wednesdays)
DESCRIPTION:This four week course (2nd & 9th October then 6th & 13th November) is intended for complete beginners and will provide an introduction to the art and basic processes of the major types of printmaking. SUMMARY:Gestural Life Drawing 1 (Workshop)
DESCRIPTION:The first of two workshops\, both using an immediate visceral approach to life drawing. By trusting the hand and eye coordination to look\, draw and work fast with complete concentration\, fresh dynamic gestural drawings appear. The freeing up of line and brush create drawings full of energy and life as you capture the essence of the pose. \nThe session will compose of mostly shorter poses going into longer ones\, in the afternoon where you can use any materials you please or move around the room. \nThis week we will use ink and twig\, sponge\, and water colour in saucers. \n \nFor any queries or for further information please contact: sally@cainer.com \nwww.sallyfisher.net

SUMMARY:Painting Water (Weekend Workshop)
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is about painting water in the landscape – including streams and rivers\, lakes and puddles\, and the sea! \nBecause it takes place over a weekend\, it will be possible for painters to take time to study and analyse the tones and colours of their source material\, and to experiment with them before embarking on the painting itself. \nThis is not a plein air workshop\, but an opportunity to investigate and to try techniques which will result in gaining the confidence to paint outside water in and informed but instinctive way. \nPlease bring your own materials\, perhaps in a variety of media and including rough sketch books\, so that you are free to explore the possibilities that arise. \n \nFor any queries or for further information please contact: karenpopham@googlemail.com or 07729 712454 \nwww.karenpophamartist.com
