SUMMARY:Develop a Painting
DESCRIPTION:This course is for artists of all levels of experience\, regardless of the media you work with\, the subjects you choose to paint\, or whether you define yourself as a figurative or an abstract painter.

Together we will explore your individual way of approaching a painting and understand your own painting process and how you interpret what you see.
This knowledge provides a platform upon which to develop practical skills and techniques to build confidence in your own ability to bring your inspiration to a completed work that pleases you. \nThe course will take place over five consecutive Mondays\, beginning a new work at the start and following its journey over the duration.
However\, it may be that you choose to explore and develop other options along the way and end up with several pieces of work besides the original. This can be a constructive way of working… \nOver the five days\, please feel free to bring in work that you have at home if you would like to\, so that we can review its strengths and examine anything you might feel is unresolved. The chance to consider other people’s work as well as your own is an invaluable resource – and one of the greatest benefits of being in a class! \n \nAny medium is fine – but bring a lot of surfaces so that it will be possible to try out different things and do some exercises\, which will include drawing and colour mixing. \nkarenpophamartist.com \nkarenpopham@googlemail.com

SUMMARY:Introduction to Printmaking: Linocut & Drypoint (Two Day Workshop)
DESCRIPTION:Thursday and Friday 9.45am to 4.15pm \nPrintmaking covers a wide range of techniques each with its own methods and particular appearance. \nTwo of these techniques\, Linocut and Drypoint will be introduced in the workshop. They illustrate different approaches to printmaking though both involve making marks on a printing plate. With Linocut the image is made on the surface of the lino or vinyl plate (in relief); in Drypoint the image is cut or scratched into the metal or plastic plate (Intaglio). Inking of the plates differs too\, typically a roller is used to apply ink to the Lino plate and a card or squeegee for the Drypoint. Within each technique there are many variations and each lends itself to particular types of image and artistic styles. \nThe workshop will cover the basics of each technique including image selection\, plate making and inking and look at some of the possibilities each offers. Core printmaking processes including paper selection\, use of a press and registration will also be introduced. Attendees will create a number of plates and prints over the two days. \n\nWorkshop aimed at beginners\, no experience required. \nApart from suitable clothing and lunch nothing to bring. I’ll circulate an email closer to the date with more information. \nW: www.TheUnseenView.com \nE: nigel@nigelgrist.com \nIG: nigel.grist

SUMMARY:Painting Skies (Weekend Workshop)
DESCRIPTION:Saturday and Sunday 10.30am to 4.00pm \nSkies can be easy to paint\, but also very difficult! \nThe aim of this course is to increase our understanding of the sky and to empower us to paint it more convincingly. \nThe sky\, because it holds our prime light source\, affects everything we see. \nBut this course involves the study of painting the sky itself\, and an exploration and understanding of the behaviour of the light and colours within it\, which directly relates to the light and colours of the subjects beneath it. Discovering how to analyse what is happening in the sky\, and to relay it convincingly\, lends a credibility to the entire painting. \nI also find the formation and nature of clouds fascinating – endlessly changing the landscape beneath them\, but also reforming and affecting the light\, colour and shadows within themselves. Painting clouds presents wonderful opportunities for the artist to convey atmosphere and mood\, even movement.\nDuring the course we will look at skies painted by other artists as well as experimenting and making many studies of our own. \n \nkarenpopham@googlemail.com \nwww.karenpophamartist.com
