SUMMARY:Travelling Sketchbooks (Thursdays for Four Weeks)

Emphasis will be on finding a good composition and mark making. \nBack in the studio we can develop our sketches into larger works using mixed media and discuss how to go forward.\nMaybe try out coloured pencils\, watercolour\, and pastel (oil or soft). \n \n

SUMMARY:Exploring the use of Source Material (Mondays for Four Weeks)
DESCRIPTION:Exploring the use of source material\, whether it be photographs\, sketches and studies\, memories or ideas\, this course will help us recognize what is driving our desire to paint something. Understanding the intent\, and how to use and translate the source material to achieve it\, helps us communicate more effectively with the viewer and induce a response in them. Whether there is a story or narrative element\, a celebration of observation\, or the creation of a mood or atmosphere\, using the material tools and the skills we have at our disposal will help us to create our best work. \n \nYou should bring your preferred painting media and I will send an appropriate email a few days before each class as the course progresses. \nkarenpophamartist.com \nkarenpophamartist@googlemail.com \n

SUMMARY:Less can be More - Simplifying Work and Keeping Meaning (Workshop)
DESCRIPTION:How often do we reflect and think our work was better an hour or so ago?  Wish that we could undo the last addition? Has it drifted too far from the starting intentions leading to the loss of our original excitement to feelings of disappointment and frustration.  In this one-day workshop we will be exploring simplifying your work to its essence\, while maintaining your intention and meaning without additional distracting extras and unnecessary flourishes. \nThe day will explore art that has maintained meaning in its purity and simplicity\, by working through a series of exercises to develop a toolkit for you to use in your practice and on future projects. \n \nwww.annchesterking.co.uk \nannchesterking@gmail.com

SUMMARY:The 2025 Art Lecture
DESCRIPTION:We are very pleased to announce that David Kirk (Artist & Art Historian) will be giving a talk on the highly regarded and influential PIERO DELLA FRANCESCA Saturday April 12th from 12.30 to 1.30 pm for Drinks and bits\, followed by the talk at 1.30 pm until about 2.45. \nMembers free\, non members £5\, pay on day. \nPIERO DELLA FRANCESCA (1415-1492)\nIn his lifetime he was better known as a Mathematician more than Artist. He painted fewer than 30 paintings\, sometimes taking over 10 years to finish\, but the meaning of some is still argued over by Art Historians. Although his landscapes are bathed in clear Tuscan morning light\, they are still mysterious and underpinned by geometry. This makes them remarkable\, intriguing and unique. \nDAVID KIRK\n \nBorn in 1960\, David was brought up in rural Somerset and went on to study at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art (1980-83) graduating with a degree in Fine Art. David is a professional painter in his own right (look him up!) and has for many years been Head of History of Art at Uppingham school. His own work has been exhibited at RONA gallery\, St James Gallery\, Flying Colours and Langham Galleries. He is now represented by the Goldmark Gallery. \n

SUMMARY:Creative Techniques and Possibilities (Mondays for Five Weeks)
DESCRIPTION:This course is for artists of all levels of experience\, regardless of the media you work with\, the subjects you choose to paint\, or whether you define yourself as a figurative or an abstract painter. \nTogether we will explore your individual way of approaching a painting and understand your own painting process and how you interpret what you see.\nThis knowledge provides a platform upon which to develop practical skills and techniques to build confidence in your own ability to bring your inspiration to a completed work that pleases you. \nThe course will take place over five consecutive Mondays\, beginning a new work at the start and following its journey over the duration.\nHowever\, it may be that you choose to explore and develop other options along the way and end up with several pieces of work besides the original. This can be a constructive way of working… \nOver the five days\, please feel free to bring in work that you have at home if you would like to\, so that we can review its strengths and examine anything you might feel is unresolved. The chance to consider other people’s work as well as your own is an invaluable resource – and one of the greatest benefits of being in a class! \n \nAny medium is fine – but bring a lot of surfaces so that it will be possible to try out different things and do some exercises\, which will include drawing and colour mixing. \nkarenpophamartist.com \nkarenpopham@googlemail.com

SUMMARY:Printmaking Possibilities: Collagraph 2: It’s not just about the plate – Inky Ideas (Weekend Workshop)
DESCRIPTION:Saturday and Sunday 9.45am to 4.15pm \nMost printmaking techniques involve a plate of some type and ink\, typically applied with a roller or brush. There are many other possibilities however\, including sprays\, cloths and offsetting from other surfaces. The ink itself can be modified to influence the interaction between colours. Masking or stencils can control the areas to which ink is applied and partial wiping or lifting of ink allows for multiple colours in an image. Various techniques will be introduced and a number of collagraph plates will be developed and printed to explore the possibilities of plate making and inking. \n \nI’ll circulate an email closer to the date with more information on what you need to bring\, but an open mind and willingness to experiment will help. \nW: www.TheUnseenView.com \nE: nigel@nigelgrist.com \nIG: nigel.grist

SUMMARY:Mixed Media – Possibilities of Pastels - Inspired by the Work of Edgar Degas (Weekend Workshop)
DESCRIPTION:Saturday and Sunday 10am to 3.30pm \nDegas loved working with pastels\, both oil and soft. He was a great innovator of the medium and included it in mixed media work. His most well known pastel pieces are of ballet dancers\, racehorses and women washing or bathing but he did produce a number of landscapes and it will be these images that will be the starting point of this workshop. \nYou will explore Degas’ technique and adapt it in your own landscape paintings/drawings; you may even devise a technique of your own. \nIt will be a weekend of experimentation\, a modicum of fun and\, hopefully some worthwhile and satisfying results of which you will be proud. \n \nA list of materials will be sent closer to the start of the workshop. \nianfcarr@btinternet.com tel: 07760 308525
